New ISO Biodiversity Standard Launched

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has unveiled ISO 17298, the world’s first international standard focused on biodiversity for organizations. Announced during the ISO’s annual meeting in Kigali on October 20, 2025, this standard establishes guidelines for companies to effectively assess and manage their biodiversity impacts, dependencies, and risks.

As biodiversity faces unprecedented threats, with more than 55% of global GDP linked to ecosystems, ISO 17298 provides a structured framework for integrating nature considerations into core business strategies. It aims to address the growing regulatory and reputational pressures companies face regarding biodiversity loss.

The new standard is designed to be applicable across various sectors, from small businesses to large corporations, NGOs and public entities. It allows organizations to align with existing frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, facilitating the transition to nature-positive practices.

As organizations adopt ISO 17298, it is expected to drive measurable actions and accountability, helping to foster resilience in both business operations and natural ecosystems.

The biodiversity standard, ISO 17298, is the first of several biodiversity-related standards under development by ISO. Future work will include guidance on biodiversity monitoring, net gain, vocabulary, and product characterisation based on native species, laying the groundwork for a consistent, science-based approach to nature-positive business. It also opens the door to emerging nature-based finance mechanisms and enhanced stakeholder trust.
